How to Make an Unturned Server

Install, configure and launch a reliable Unturned dedicated server.

Updated August 2026Vendor-neutralOfficial-documentation checked
Back up the instance and stop the server before changing configuration or plugins.

Prepare the server

Install the Unturned Dedicated Server tool through Steam or SteamCMD. On Linux, use a separate service account and directory rather than running the game as root. Allow the chosen game port through the host firewall and provider firewall.

Create the instance

Launch the dedicated server once with a unique server ID so it creates its folder. Configuration normally lives under Servers/<server-id>/. Stop the process before editing files.

Set the essentials

Put the public name, map, player limit, perspective and port in Commands.dat. One setting belongs on each line.

Example Commands.dat

Name My Unturned Server
Map PEI
MaxPlayers 24
Perspective Both
Port 27015
Owner YOUR_STEAM64_ID

Launch and test

Start the server, watch the console for a successful level load, then connect using the public IP and game port. Test from outside the server network. If it is missing from the browser, check the firewall, query ports and GSLT before changing game files.
